ROSES OF AFRICA AND THE MAX HAVELAAR LABEL:
Presentation of Max Havelaar:
- a non-profit making association
- the objective is to issue a label on products that come up to the international standards of fair trade.
A concrete impact:
One million producers in 50 developing countries benefit from the requirements of the Max Havelaar label: Improvement of the social level: increase in living standards, access to medical care and education…
On the economic front: access to credit, increased negotiation power;
On the environment front: decrease in the use of chemical inputs; re-processing of waste
=> They recover mastery over their own future.
Security of a certification system:
A product benefits from the label when it comes from certified, controlled channels. On the field, independent inspectors control producers and suppliers at regular intervals.
Why a label for roses:
Europe consumes more than 50% of cut flowers produced in the world. The rose is unquestionably
the star product as it represents more than 50% of the purchases of cut flowers.
A dynamic industry, but a thorny problem…
Economic problems: main income source for thousand of people;
Social problems: lack of job security, low level of unionisation or collective bargaining, low wages, working hours, discrimination against women, AIDS spreading;
Environment problems: massive use of chemical inputs, effects of pesticides on the workers’ health.
