ROSES OF AFRICA and the Rose Garden: Africa passionately

The image of the Black Africa that we have all collected resembles a sequence from the film “Out of Africa”: savannah as far as the eye can reach, wild animals, a certain idea of adventure and exoticism.

Africa, of course, is all that but also so much more: the markets with thousand of fragrances, noisy towns and various types of countryside that remain to be domesticated, trips by bush taxi, spontaneity and a sense of contact… The feeling that modernity has not yet brushed off solidarity and the taste of the present.

Also, Africa is… the world poorest continent, the scene of permanent tribal wars, corruption, endemic diseases, unbearable reality revealed in 2005 by the film: “Le cauchemar de Darwin” (Darwin’s Nightmare).

And it is because we have been trapped in that dualism, between this deep attraction and this feeling of injustice, that we are now trying in our modest way to influence development thanks to fair trade and the Max Havelaar association. East Africa, through which the Equator passes, is a region favourable to horticulture. Kenya was the initiator of the cultivation of flowers, followed by Uganda and more recently by Tanzania.

It is in this context that Roses of Africa wishes to utilise the natural assets of this country to change the production, working and living conditions of the population by taking part in the development of fair trade.
